One of our outstanding frame jobs is to fit the fasteners for the bogie pivot stretcher. This sits inside the frames under the smokebox saddle. The stretcher is fastened to the frames with drive fit bolts that have cone heads. The heads are inside the frames and the nuts are on the outside. With the restricted space available, it is difficult to wield a hammer to drive in the bolts. We had adapters made to fit over the cone head bolts and used a hydraulic jack to push in the bolts. 3 of the bolts have been fitted in the photo; the hexagon headed bolts are temporary fasteners.

Job done! Some of the pivot stretcher bolts are shared with the bogie bolster.

Mike is using the Asquith drill to ream out the bolt holes for the brake hanger brackets. On the front 2 brackets we will have to use rivets on the bottom holes as the design of the bracket makes it impossible to get access for the drill. On the rear bracket (being reamed on the photo) the bottom 2 fasteners are studs because of a stretcher between the frames.

Geoff checked the internal dimensions of the brake hanger bracket holes after reaming

Highslide JS April 2024

Having procured the pony truck pivot pin and checked the fit, we could fit the fasteners that secure the support bracket to the bottom of the firebox support stretcher. 2 jacks are locating the support bracket while Geoff tightens the nuts.
